A shale shaker is a device used in drilling rigs to remove large solids, or cuttings, from drilling fluid. It’s the first step in a drilling rig’s solids control system.

How it works

  • A shale shaker is a vibrating sieve that shakes drill cuttings across wire mesh screens
  • The drill cuttings are separated from the drilling fluid, or mud, and recirculated back into the well bore
  • The shaker’s performance can be optimized by adjusting the angle of the frame, the type of movement, and the frequency and amplitude of oscillations

Why it’s important

  • Shale shakers are cost-effective and essential for removing solids from drilling fluid
  • If shale shakers aren’t used properly, other solids removal equipment won’t work as well
  • Removing solids reduces the risk of problems like stuck pipe, lost circulation, and well-control issues

Where it’s used

  • Shale shakers are used in many industries, including oil and gas drilling, mining, and coal cleaning
  • They can be used for drilling water wells, geothermal wells, and more
