Why Centralizers are Important:
  • Cementing:
    A properly centered casing allows for a uniform and complete cement sheath to be placed around the casing, sealing it effectively to the wellbore wall. If the casing is off-center, the cement may not completely fill the space, potentially leading to leaks or poor wellbore stability. 
  • Toolstring Integrity:
    Centralizers can also help prevent the toolstring (the drilling tools) from getting hung up or damaged by obstructions or irregularities in the wellbore. 
  • Fluid Flow:
    By keeping the casing centered, centralizers facilitate efficient fluid flow during drilling operations, allowing mud to effectively carry cuttings back to the surface. 
  • Reduced Friction:
    Centralizers minimize contact between the casing and the wellbore, reducing friction and wear, particularly in deviated or high-angle wells.

There are 4 types of centralizers (Fig. 1): bow-spring, rigid, semi-rigid, and mold-on; each with its own pros and cons. Since the bow springs are slightly larger than the wellbore, they can provide complete centralization in vertical or slightly deviated wells.
