  • Sealing Function:
    The wash pipe is a cylindrical component situated between the rotating drill string and the stationary housing of the top drive or swivel. Its primary role is to create a high-pressure seal, preventing drilling fluid from escaping at the connection point. 
  • High-Pressure Resistance:
    Drilling mud is pumped under high pressure down the drill string, and the wash pipe is designed to withstand this pressure and the abrasive nature of the drilling fluid. 
  • Continuous Rotation:
    The wash pipe allows the drill string to rotate continuously while maintaining a secure seal, ensuring efficient drilling operations. 
  • Replaceable Component:
    Due to the wear and tear from friction and abrasive fluids, wash pipes are designed to be replaceable. Regular maintenance and replacement are crucial for preventing leaks and ensuring safe operation. 
  • Connection Points:
    The wash pipe is often found between the main shaft and the gooseneck of the top drive or swivel. It connects to the main shaft via a compression device and to the gooseneck via another compression device.
