Course description

Rotary screw air compressors are rotary positive displacement machines capable of high-speed operation over a wide range of operating pressures and flow rates at high efficiencies. In screw air compressors, there are no valves or other mechanical forces that can cause imbalance. This allows a compressor to operate at high speeds while combining a large flow rate with small exterior dimensions.

Rotary screw air compressors utilize two helical rotors (a male and a female) that intermesh to compress air. As the rotors turn, they trap air in the spaces between their threads and progressively decrease the volume of these spaces, thus increasing the air pressure. This "positive displacement" action forces the compressed air out of the outlet.

All air compressors need air receiver tanks to ensure consistent performance. Rotary screw compressors and variable speed drive (VSD) compressors generally require a small tank to maintain their efficiency.

The main advantage of a rotary compressor is its ability to provide continuous, high-volume compressed air with greater energy efficiency and less noise compared to other compressor types. This makes it ideal for industrial environments where a steady air supply is crucial.
